Āpōpō CPD Requirements
Continuing Professional Development Requirements
What is CPD?
CPD is continuing professional development, the term used to describe the learning activities professionals engage in to maintain, develop and enhance their skills and knowledge.
The asset management profession continuously grows and changes. New practices, successful and unsuccessful experiences, legislative requirements and regulatory interventions all constantly emerge and evolve. Continuing professional development ensures that a professional practicing asset management is up to date, understands the latest methods and emergent principles and is equipped to effectively apply this knowledge in their work for the benefit of the communities they serve.
Āpōpō seeks to support every member to maintain and enhance their professional knowledge on an ongoing basis.
Definitions
CPD is measured in hours completed for three different types of activity:
- Informal CPD – Reading professionally relevant publications, conference general sessions attendance, participation in Āpōpō Special Interest Groups, Committees, and Board, other formal and informal professional development not related to Asset Management.
- Formal CPD – At least 50% Asset Management related: courses provided by Āpōpō or other training organisations, conference technical sessions attendance, presentation preparation and delivery, mentoring / mentee, application for Asset Management Chartered Professional.
- Ethics CPD – Completion of an Āpōpō approved professional ethics formal learning course (2 hours 3 yearly to maintain AMCP).
Obligations
AMA and AMCP holders have an obligation to maintain their professional accreditation by completing the required number of CPD hours annually:
Informal |
Formal |
Ethics |
Total |
|
---|---|---|---|---|
Asset Management Associate |
10 hours annual |
10 hours annual |
Nil |
20 hours annual |
Asset Management Chartered Professional |
20 hours annual |
20 hours annual (including 3 yearly ethics) |
2 hours every 3 years |
40 hours annual |
Hours may not be substituted between formal and informal CPD. For example, completing 15 formal hours and 25 informal hours will not meet the CPD obligation for AMCP even though the activity totals 40 hours.
Timing
The CPD year runs 1 July – 30 June. After the first two years, a rolling three-year period may be used to complete the cumulative annual obligations for that three-year period.
For example, an AMCP must complete a minimum of 60 formal hours of CPD in their first three years (3 years of 20hrs annual), and thereafter 60 formal hours within every three-year period.
After the first two years, where the three-year obligation has not been met one grace year will be granted, provided that in the next year the three-year obligation is met.
If the three-year obligation is not met in the year after a grace year, the AMA or AMCP may be withdrawn by Āpōpō.
Record Keeping
Āpōpō provides a record of learning log for each Āpōpō member with an AMA or AMCP designation. The record of learning can be found and maintained in your Member Dashboard.
Other learning logs may be used, such as a personal spreadsheet or a logging system of another professional association.
The following information must be recorded per entry in the log:
- Date CPD undertaken
- Type (formal/informal)
- Description eg course name, conference name, publication read etc
- Hours completed
- Supporting documentation eg completion certificate, receipt, ticket if available/applicable
It is the responsibility of each AMA or AMCP to maintain sufficient records to be able to demonstrate that their CPD obligations are met.

Ethical Conduct
It is the responsibility of each professional to ensure professional conduct is upheld, all recorded CPD hours have been completed honestly, and ethical standards and behaviours outlined in the Āpōpō Code of Conduct are followed. This means that CPD records are self-recorded on the basis of honesty.
Auditing
To ensure the integrity of the professional practice programme, Āpōpō annually completes an audit of a sample number of CPD portfolios. Portfolios will be audited on a random basis, due to appearing unusual, or as a result of a complaint.
If audited, members may be asked to explain the relevance of any CPD activities that are not supported by appropriate evidence in their record of learning, or complete additional CPD within a one year grace period. Failure to do so may lead to a more formal process of considering the member's fitness to retain their AMA or AMCP designation.
